Penny
Sells for $6,302 on eBay
An eBay Power Seller
from Tucson, Ariz.,
recently sold a penny on eBay for $6301.99. This was no ordinary one-cent
piece; it was a rare 1794 Starred Reverse Liberty Cap Cent. The coin is
believed to be one of only 57 in the world.
The coin was found by a new employee
of the seller’s coin shop, who recognized that the coin was, in fact, a valuable starred reverse. Due to
corrosion, only a few of the 94 tiny stars, which are smaller than sugar
granules, are still visible on the left side of the old coin.
The item was listed for $.01 on June 30th. During the first
day of the auction, bids reached $3,550. Over the course of the 10-day auction,
31 bids were placed, as eBay members recognized that this was a rare and
valuable coin. The auction closed on July 10th with a winning bid of
$6,302.
The seller provided two photos, including close-ups of each side of the
coin. A detailed description of the coin was also included with the listing. With
a rare item such as this, clear and detailed photography and a complete
description helped the seller to showcase his item, communicating the item's
authenticity and history to potential buyers. Sellers can learn more tips for
