An eBay seller from Los
Angeles recently sold a rare Mexican Silver sangria
pitcher for $4,359.09. The seller found
this unique William Spratling piece at an estate sale
and auctioned it using an eBay Trading Assistant at The Spencer Company.
William Spratling is known for his unique silver pieces that
incorporate Mexican culture. This
hand-hammered, round sangria pitcher by Spratling is
very uncommon and features a built-in strainer and strap handle with loops. The 7.5" pitcher has an 8" diameter
and is in excellent condition. The
bottom of the pitcher is marked with the word “sterling” and the WS Print Circle, a Spratling hallmark, indicating that the pitcher is from Spratling’s first design period and dates from 1931 to
1946.
The
pitcher was sold using a Reserve Price
Auction Format, which allows sellers to secretly specify the minimum
amounts that they would accept for their items. Bidders cannot see the
specified amount, and to win the auction, the highest bidder must meet the
reserve price. If the reserve price is not met, the seller is not obligated to
sell the item. The Spratling
pitcher sold for more than twice the reserve price, which was set at $2,000.
The seller provided five photos,
including close-ups and images of the top with the strainer and lid. With rare
items such as this, photography plays a key role in determining the outcome of
the listing. Clear and detailed photography helps the seller to showcase an
item, communicating the item's authenticity and history to potential buyers. eBay helps sellers give it their “best shot” with the eBay Picture Services
webpage, http://pages.ebay.com/sell/pictureservices/.
